Design Based on 8 dimensions of Wellness

Physical Wellness:

Physical wellness encompasses a range of factors, including exercise, nutrition, sleep, and overall health. In interior design, physical wellness can be improved by creating a space that promotes healthy living. This may involve incorporating elements such as natural light, plants, and ergonomic furniture to encourage movement and reduce stress. A physically well-designed space can also include features that promote relaxation and rest, such as a comfortable bed, soothing colors, and a calming environment. It may also incorporate elements that encourage healthy eating habits, such as a well-equipped kitchen or a dining area with ample seating.

Intellectual Wellness:

Intellectual wellness refers to the ability to engage in creative and stimulating mental activities that expand knowledge and skills, promote critical thinking and problem-solving, and enhance cognitive abilities. In the context of interior design, intellectual wellness can be promoted through the incorporation of elements that stimulate the mind, such as books, art, puzzles, and other forms of mental stimulation. This can be achieved through the careful selection of furniture, decor, and other design elements that encourage creativity, curiosity, and intellectual growth.

In WellNest Design we always consider factors such as lighting, color, and texture to create an environment that promotes intellectual wellness. For example, natural lighting and bright colors can help stimulate the brain, while soft textures and calming colors can promote relaxation and mindfulness. Promoting intellectual wellness in interior design involves creating a space that supports and enhances mental activity, promotes lifelong learning, and fosters personal growth and development.

Emotional Wellness:

Emotional wellness in interior design refers to the creation of spaces that promote positive emotions and mental health.

In interior design, emotional wellness means considering how different design elements can impact a person's emotional well-being in each segment of their life. For example, a well-designed home can promote relaxation and comfort in the physical health segment, creativity and inspiration in the career segment, and intimacy and connection in the relationship segment.

Some ways interior design can promote emotional wellness include:

  1. Lighting: Proper lighting can influence mood and energy levels, and can help regulate sleep patterns.

  2. Colors: Different colors can evoke different emotions, and incorporating a balance of colors in a space can promote harmony and balance.

  3. Nature: Bringing natural elements such as plants or natural materials into a space can create a calming and restorative effect.

  4. Organization: A well-organized space can promote a sense of control and reduce stress.

  5. Personalization: Incorporating personal items or design elements can create a sense of belonging and connection.

By considering emotional wellness, we can create spaces that promote positive emotions, enhance mental health, and contribute to overall well-being.

Social Wellness:

Social wellness refers to the relationships we have with others and the sense of belonging and connection we feel in our communities. It is also about balancing social and personal time. In interior design, social wellness can be reflected in the design of spaces that encourage social interaction and foster a sense of community. This can include creating spaces for entertaining and interacting with friends and neighbours. In WellNest Design we like to implement elements of design that are supporting local businesses and locally made products of design, elements that promote inclusivity and diversity, such as wheelchair accessibility (most common in commercial spaces), and artwork that represents a range of cultures and backgrounds. Creating spaces that promote social wellness can help individuals feel a greater sense of connection and belonging within their environment and community.

Environmental Wellness:

Environmental wellness is one of the dimensions of wellness, which refers to the state of one's surrounding environment and how it impacts their overall well-being. In residential interior design, environmental wellness involves creating a living space that is sustainable, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing and it can be achieved through various strategies, such as:

  1. Use of eco-friendly materials: This involves using materials that are renewable, biodegradable, and non-toxic. Examples include bamboo flooring, reclaimed wood, low-VOC paints, and natural fabrics.

  2. Proper ventilation and air quality: This involves ensuring that the living space is well-ventilated to prevent the buildup of harmful pollutants and allergens. The use of air-purifying plants can also help improve air quality.

  3. Access to natural light: Exposure to natural light has been shown to improve mood, energy levels, and overall well-being. In residential interior design, this can be achieved through the use of large windows, skylights, and light-colored walls.

  4. Incorporation of nature: The presence of nature has been shown to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. In residential interior design, this can be achieved through the use of indoor plants, natural materials, and nature-inspired artwork.

Financial Wellness:

Financial wellness refers to the state of being financially stable and secure. To apply the Wheel of Life to financial wellness in residential interior design, WellNest Design would work with the client to develop a plan to improve their financial wellness, incorporating elements such as proper lighting, storage solutions, and comfortable seating to create a space that promotes productivity, relaxation, and positive thinking. We would also consider the overall design aesthetic of the space, incorporating colors, textures, and patterns that promote a sense of calm and tranquillity, as well as help clients feel organized and in control of their home office spaces, working areas and business spaces.

Spiritual Wellness:

Spiritual wellness is an important aspect of overall wellness. In the context of residential interior design, the Wheel of Life can be used to identify areas of a home that can be designed to promote spiritual wellness. Some examples of areas that can be improved include:

  1. Meditation spaces: A designated area for meditation can help promote spiritual wellness. This can be a small space in a bedroom or a separate room dedicated to quiet contemplation.

  2. Nature: Incorporating natural elements into the home, such as plants or natural materials, can help connect residents to nature and promote a sense of spirituality.

  3. Art and decor: Choosing art and decor that reflects the resident's spiritual beliefs can help create a sense of peace and calm in the home.

  4. Lighting: Lighting can play a significant role in promoting spiritual wellness. Soft lighting or dimmer switches can help create a calming atmosphere in the home.

  5. Sacred objects: Incorporating sacred objects, such as prayer beads or religious icons, into the home can help create a sense of connection to something larger than oneself.

By using the Wheel of Life to evaluate different areas of a home and incorporating elements that promote spiritual wellness, residential interior design can help create a home that supports overall wellness and well-being.

Relationships Wellness:

Relationship wellness is an important aspect of overall wellness and happiness. By identifying areas that need improvement, you can work towards building stronger and more fulfilling relationships. In terms of residential interior design, creating a space that promotes relationship wellness might involve designing spaces that facilitate communication and connection, as well as positive interaction with kids and family, such as open-plan living areas or cozy nooks for intimate conversations, gaming rooms and play areas. Additionally, the use of color, lighting, and other design elements can create a sense of warmth and comfort, which can help foster positive emotions and connections in your relationships.
