Why Create a Meditation Space?
I truly believe that we are all influenced by our surroundings, and you don’t have to believe in Feng Shui to notice that each room in your house evokes different feelings. In the kitchen we feel like eating something, in the office it is easier to concentrate and think, in the bedroom we want to relax. Also many agree that watching TV or using iPad bed can interfere with our sleep. Likewise, we might have difficulty finding stillness in an area of our home associated with activity and energy. If you practice yoga and mediate, you will find that it is much easier to quiet our mind in special space dedicated to meditation. Having this room right in your house may remind you of your intention to practice stillness more often.
How to Create a Meditation Space?
First you have to determine how many people will be using this space, is it just you or do you practice with family members?
Second, find a space that is away from busy spaces and remember that you don’t need entire room – a corner or part of the room will do. An airy and well-ventilated room is surely going to make you enjoy your meditation better.
Third, decorate your space. We recommend a minimalist approach in order to avoid distractions, but it has to have images, colors and objects that evoke senses of calm, softness and with special time for yourself or your family that is devoted to your practice. Choose something that is meaningful to you and sets this area of your home apart. Candles, plants and soft light lamps –are all great decorations! You can use this room for rest, yoga, meditation, or quiet time. If you have children, remind them that the decorations are not toys, and that this is an area of the house they can come to when they need some quiet time alone.
Here are some things we love to use when creating meditation space!
